some quick reads

it took me two evenings, three naps, and one morning to finish....both.
....i promise.
both are written by ladies i know.

one of the authors is in my small group bible study.....
the fourth book in the series just came out. i read the first.
the other author is my neighbor. there is a a sequel to this novel and she is working on the third....in between a new baby and an almost two year old.

i was curious. about both. about their style of writing, the subjects, the culture of the novels..... just curious. curious what reading a book when you know that author is like.....found out it is not much different than just reading a book. i forgot that i knew the authors.

miracle girls: high school teens.... diverse not cookie cutter - creative. the coming together of an unlikely group of girlfriends. kooky parents, cool teachers, a little bit of teen romance, youth group culture of my bi-gone eras. i was smitten. i laughed out loud....and i even teared-up at the end.

a love noire: romance novel. the upward black new yorkers, multi-cultural, bohemian, sexy... a bit more sexy than i am used to (made me realize how square i really am...in a good way)....totally engaged by fascinating characters and a complicated love story. it pushed my cultural awareness through language, politics, and pop references. some beautiful poetry mixed with knowledge, history, and culture of places i don't know much about. not to be read around young readers....luckily mine can't quite read yet. but i laughed out loud.... and i teared-up at the end......here is part of novel's conclusion:
"grace - the space for mercy and unconditional love
for compassion and beauty that rises out of pain.
it respects what it can't immediately understand,
it seeks to accept, without fear of reprisals,
all that makes a person himself.
grace gives us the strength to know
the potential and limits of love
and to be unselfish,
letting go of what we cannot affirm.
i ask god to take my soul when i die,
but in the meantime, i pray for the gift of grace."
