few finishes and summer reading beginnings...
i signed up for the reading program at the local library.

i mean i signed the kids up as well.....we will all read 15 minutes a day..... we usually take sweet pea's morning nap as reading time....and then there is the beloved room time that will still be a part of summer routine....but 15 minutes at the least.
so far......

day after night. anita diamant.
i wanted to like this more than i did.
it was slow to start......
it picked up in the middle.
i was engrossed by the end.
but it didn't really make up for the beginning.
okay, maybe a little bit.
story based on actual facts of post-holocaust survivors seeking refuge in palestine but find themselves in an internment camp. the story of their rescue is told through four women in the camp.... all with very different stories of the war, the life before the war, and survival through the war.
food rules: an eater's manual.

of course.....i love him.
how can i not.... he reminds me what food really is.... real! quick, easy read. as lydia said.... you can read in an afternoon. breezy.
i mean, we have a diet problem in our country. thanks michael pollan for being a rich voice in how to eat better, have better health, and enjoy it more.....like wine every night!
"what an extraordinary achievement for a civilization: to have developed the one diet that reliably makes its people sick!" (that would be the western diet he is referring to)
point: eat food. not too much. mostly plants.
the true woman: the beauty and strength of a godly woman.

so wish the cover was not pink.
seriously, editors.
a theological look at what we define "woman" to be from biblical perspective. not easy to read....this is a rich and challenging book. she talks about piety, purity, community, prayer, and even the nasty "s-word"-- submission..... hey, it is scripture. it is important to digest. what i loved about her book is that she intertwines real women's stories into each chapter....stories of loss, divorce, abuse, abandonment, sorrow, grief, etc. while hunt takes you through scripture, she lets other women express where that theology has allowed jesus to meet her in the midst of pain. it was worth my time and worth going back to again....and worth going over the reflection question more.
"the true woman is one whose redeemed character is being shaped and driven by god's word. she is a true reflection of god's glory. this is not just a tall order -- it is a terrifying order."
love will keep up together.

actually read this awhile ago.
good o'le young adult fiction that i enjoy.
concludes the series... four high school friends.
this is their senior year: boys, college, dances, family, faith.
it was a good conclusion. not cookie cutter, which i appreciated.
will pass along to the few teens that i know.
