as i pass the time
a few quick reads....
honey for a woman's heart
gladys hunt i skimmed.
it is an elaborate book list.....but pause everyone once in a while to get the nuggets of wisdom and insight into that was fun, encouraging, and reminded me to read good stuff.
the girl who chased the moon.
sarah addison allen.
i was captured on the first page. it is not a complicated book.... but it has some complicated characters. well actually, more like hurt characters with longings for healing and happiness. it is beautifully written, a slight bit simple, but some of the images, language, metaphors.... stunning. and i love the magical realism that she incorporates in the story to make it light and enjoyable versus heavy or dark or depressing. it is just a good story about people finding some redemption in a town with secrets.
close to famous.
joan bauer.
one this i gleaned from the gladys hunt book was finding an author and reading everything he/she had written. i don't think i have really done that as a read.... then i saw joan bauer's latest book. YA fiction but i can say i have enjoyed each of her books. this was no different.
middle school girl who loves to bake and dreams of being on the food network. easy, small town with interesting characters. it is not a dramatic book but a read you feel like you slowly fall into. ultimately about how we view success and what it takes to get there. there are real issues like abuse, literacy, city economic but similarly to allen's book it does it in a way that is light and engaging...... not dark and heavy. it was a delightful read. i would read anything bauer wrote.... even if it is for middle schoolers (wink, wink).

"reading is a sage way to bump up against life. reading may be an escape, but it is not escape from my own life and problems. it is escape from the narrow boundaries of being only me. reading in some wonderful way helps me find out who i am." (page 24)i was going to return it to the friend i borrowed it from, but decided to go back through it and write down some titles i wanted to remember to put on my "to read" list. it was long but of some good stuff.... not sure it was anything i could not have come up with on my own, but it was a good read. a few authors i would like to check out are: isabel allende, maeve bundy, anne tyler, gail godwin. and i was reminded again that i need to read little women!
