a few fun reads
in the midst of coming off of vacation and looking forward into the holiday season... i hunkered down with a few books to pass the time. i will admit that i actually let my children watch just a bit too much tv while i was reading one of these.

oh how i loved this one.
all these lovely women learning how to cook, use a knife, cut up a chicken.....learning about healthy options that don't cost too much. and oh how i wish i had been in this class. to be on the journey of exploring food and cooking skills along others.... i was envious. what a quick but fun read. it also includes recipes for simple things....like vinaigrettes. i loved it...and have to thank my sister-in-law who recommended it to me over a year ago. thanks, tiff!

well.....it was a bit 'gatsby' for me. too indulgent, too long island, too much despair. AND then there was a crazy twist about 40 pages from the end. i had to sit up and say, "WHAT?!" so that shift at the end took me by surprise but i am not sure that it made the rest of the novel worth it. it is creative, a story told in third person but focusing on five different characters. it is not linear but bounces between the same incidents from a different characters participation of that incident. and then there is the dark, psychological tension of the dead body. no spoilers from me.

aliens. invasion. body snatchers.
yup....and i could not put it down. i might even be excited that there is a movie version coming out. but back to the book. so interesting. complex human issues of violence, humanity, love, sacrifice. and then the alien twist. there has to been a suspension of disbelief or you just can't get past the premise. but if you can.... i really liked it. characters are weak but i wasn't reading it for deep, well-developed, intense characters. so there you go.
